Judge Doesn’t “Believe”- Bans South Carolina License Plate

A US judge evidentially doesn’t want people in South Carolina to display the fact that they “Believe”. The judge ordered South Carolina not to issue a vehicle number plate with a Christian image and slogan.

I believeThe South Carolina legislature had approved the  license plate which has a cross in front of a stained glass window and  “I Believe” written along the top. Several hundred people in the Palmetto State had registered to buy the Special License Plate.

District Judge Cameron Currie said that the plate violated the First Amendment, which enshrines the separation of church and state. The case was brought by Americans United, which supports the separation of church and state, on behalf of several individuals and Hindu and American-Arab groups.

Maybe this is just another example of the Constitution working against the masses, in favor of some folks that our fore-fathers never considered.

    This has nothing to do with the judge “believing”. When you go to work you are asked to do a job, not enforce your beliefs. GET A CLUE!

    What about enforcing freedom of speech! If the plates are in violation of church and state then so is all of our money. Of course this will soon be a moot issue since our money will be worthless before long so those who object to the offensive saying can just burn theirs.

    The Constitution protects the individual against the tyranny of the majority – exactly what our forefathers contemplated. I served 22 years in the Marines and sent three sons to Iraq and Afghanistan for a total of six combat tours to fight religious repression, and I am proud that the judge’s decision arrived on the 234th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

    God save the United States Constitution!

    So the persecution of Christians continues. Even in the nation that proclaims itself to be that of “freedom of speech”.

    It is quite ok, and no one listens to the discrimination complaints, on those who have Florida Seminole picture plates or Atlanta Braves plates or Cleveland Indians plates or any of the other many and sundry of plates that depict the American Indian in a negative light. Not to mention those who have plates that bear the Confederate flag, yes bet most of you God haters
    outside of Alabama, Georgia, Lousiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North & South Carolina, Tennesee & Virginia didn’t know that they all have that option! Probably don’t care either!

    Yet the symbol of the most peaceful Man to ever walk the face of the Earth is not allowed to adorn a license plate?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    Something is radically wrong here!!!!!!!!

    “Most Peaceful Man on Earth”??

    He might have been peaceful, but all the people that followed were FAR from peaceful, their’s been more deaths caused by christianty and other religions than one can even possibly fathom.

    I’d rather have a picture of a bird or something, at least then I know there’s not some nutcase that’s going to go around blowing people up in “the name of god”

    Apart from not separating church and state, I could see how this would be offensive to people of other religions. What if you saw someone with a license plate bragging about the glory of Islam? Just because they’re your beliefs doesn’t mean they’re correct. Be a good Christian and treat others the way you want to be treated.

    @ God wins in the end

    You believe a state not officially sanctioning a christian license plate is “persecution”? Chin up bud, some of your spiritual brethren faced lions with more grace.

    The laws of this nation forbid the government from promoting one religion over another (or no religion). This is not persecution, this is the government behaving according to their promise. If you do not like it, you can seek to emigrate to a nation that does sanction Christianity as its official religion. There is a list available to you here:

    Sorry, but “in favor of some folks our forefathers never considered” is just hooie. Our forefathers did NOT intend to create a Christian Nation, and stated so, explicitly. Unless you’re talking about plates for *all* groups (Judaism, Buddhist, Muslim, Wiccan…) you are violating the separation of church and state, and doing so in the face of all our ancestors who died for our freedom.

    I’m with RetiredMarine.

    Several lies I need to point out in this article;

    ~~~A US judge evidentially doesn’t want people in South Carolina to display the fact that they “Believe”.
    Wrong, people are allowed to display religious icons on their car, this is about a license plate, not the whole thing. The reason it is not allowed is because it is against the constitution. Why should peoples taxes go towards things like this?
    ~~~Maybe this is just another example of the Constitution working against the masses,

    No its not, you are allowed free speech, you are not allowed to use tax payers money for it

    ~~~in favor of some folks that our fore-fathers never considered.
    You clearly aren’t talking about the American Forefathers who made America as a secular nation because they actually considered the existence of people besides christians
    Also to the one who thinks “god wins in the end” (taking his time or he is letting this world go to hell)
    ~~~So the persecution of Christians continues. Even in the nation that proclaims itself to be that of “freedom of speech”.

    There is no persecution but its funny you bring up freedom of speech but ignore the constitution

    ~~~It is quite ok, and no one listens to the discrimination complaints,
    Like you I bet, how else can you claim a persecution of christians when it happened much more to atheists?
    ~~~Yet the symbol of the most peaceful Man to ever walk the face of the Earth is not allowed to adorn a license plate?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Something is radically wrong here!!!!!!!!

    Yes, you are missing the point that peoples tax money should not be spent on something religious like this. Would you like your tax payer money funding an Islamic license plate?

    > ‘Maybe this is just another example of the Constitution working against the masses, in favor of some folks that our fore-fathers never considered.’

    That’s kinda the point of having a Constitution.

  12. Ray

    This is not any form of persecution. You cannot use government money to support a religious group.
