Male Statue of Liberty in Charleston: Say It Ain’t So!
The National Monument Foundation thinks New York’s Lady Liberty could use a Southern male counterpart in Charleston Harbor as part of a new land development plan for Patriots Point.
The foundation has suggested a male version in the same size at a cost of $100 to $150 million to be raised mainly from private donors. The statue would represent Charleston’s rich history in keeping with the development plan’s theme of freedom and patriotism. The foundation did not mention the fact that the original Statue of Liberty is a part of the nation’s history while the suggested male counterpart statue for Charleston only would be representing the area’s history and not be a part of the area’s history.
The proposal was the first Patriots Point Development Authority board members and staffers had heard any details of the proposal and took no action.
