South Carolina Barbecue chain, Maurice’s, to remove Confederate flag
Maurice’s Barbecue is taking down the “Stars and Bars” on most of their
restaurants because the flags cost too much to maintain, they said according to WLTX in Columbia. They also said that they would put the flags back up if the economy improved.
Perhaps it is a ploy to get South Carolinians to come to the restaurant in an attempt to save the flag while simultaneously boosting sales for the Maurice’s chain. A poll posted by WLTX says that 50% of individuals would stop eating there if all the confederate flags were taken down. Only 12% of people said they would eat there if the flags were removed. 37% said they already eat there.
Maurice’s has 17 locations across the state. The West Columbia and Lexington locations will continue flying the flag while the others will have to suffer.

Maurice Bessinger established his reputation as a hate-filled racist many years ago. Removing the red rag from some of his stores will not improve his reputation.
I personally think the Flag should stay. Maurice’s has fought for a long time to keep that Flag up. They have stood their ground. Now they’re backing down?!? Why? So they can make more money from tourists, some of whom have refused to eat there because the Flag was up. Wondering if they have done the math on this one. If half of their customers stop eating there, do they really think they can make that up with tourists?? I really hope they reconsider this action. It’s about Heritage, Not Hate!! To the owner’s of Maurice’s: Stand your ground, and stand up for your heritage!!!
“because the flags cost too much to maintain”
There are a ton of people selling them along side the road for $5.00. That’s the cost of one of their sandwiches. Definitely a marketing ploy.
This is dumb. It’s so sad how blatantly racist some folks are. I have never eaten from that place and never will!
Lisa, you know it’s funny, but the last time I ate at one the stores, half the folks in there were black. They didn’t have a concern about the flag or the pictures on the wall inside. Maybe it’s because they know the flag doesn’t have to do with race. They could probably teach you some history! Or maybe they are descendants of some of the tens of thousands of blacks that freely fought for the south in the 1860’s.

I agree Anthony, Maurice makes some awesome BBQ in Columbia, I don’t care what he chooses to put in his restaurant, as long as the food is good I’m going to keep visiting.
