SC BlueCross Urges Colon Cancer Screening, Funds Screening for the Uninsured
In observance of national Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina encourages its members to get their fully-covered preventive screening and is funding screening programs for the uninsured in South Carolina.
BlueCross is teaming with the South Carolina Gastroenterology Association and CVS Caremark to initiate a public awareness campaign in March to encourage screening for colorectal cancer.
“Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in South Carolina, which is a travesty because most are preventable,” said Dr. Laura Long, BlueCross’ vice president of clinical quality and health management. “We urge our members to get their screenings, and we hope our donation will help the uninsured get screenings.”
This year, the company has added $20,000 to fund screenings for the uninsured through theSC Gastroenterology Association and the University of South Carolina’s Cancer Research Center. Uninsured individuals can call 803-939-4174 for more information.
