More people sick on Celebrity Mercury cruise ship out of Charleston, SC

nauseousIt seems that clean up that was led by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) on the Celebrity cruise ship Mercury was incomplete. At least 55 people have reportedly come down with a virus, once again, on the same cruise ship that had a norovirus epidemic in early February.

On the original voyage, over 400 people got sick who contracted a Norovirus on the Celebrity Mercury after leaving Charleston for the Caribbean. Once it returned to port in Charleston, DHEC delayed the next cruise on the Celebrity Mercury in order to sanitize the ship. The departure was delayed by a day but was allowed to leave after the clean up. The ship left Charleston again on February 27 with a new set of passengers that are now reportedly getting sick as well.

There are no reports on the nature of the sickness. The original outbreak was caused by norovirus and causes nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea and usually persists for several days.

I’m wondering how many people are currently ill on the Mercury. We are scheduled to leave Charleston on the Mercury on March 29th.
