Gaffney defeats Lexington for SC 4A State Championship; Goose Creek Girls take the crown

It was a beautiful run to the State 4A Championship for the Lexington Wildcats. All signs were pointing to ‘yes’. But they came up short against a strong Gaffney squad in a 71-57 loss at Colonial Life Arena.

The key to the game, according to Lexington head coach Bailey Harris, was rebounding. The Lexington Wildcats were out-rebounded on both ends of the court, allowing Gaffney to get plenty of second chance points. Still, the Wildcats tied the game on two occasions in the second half. However, Gaffney was able to pull away each time.

Quinstad Davis led Gaffney with 17 points followed by Dershawn Dawkins with 14 points. Wildcat Shaq Roland led all scorers with 20 points. Gaffney finished the season 27-2 while the Wildcats finished 25-6.

Goose Creek girls take down Spring Valley in State Championship

GooseCreekThe girls 4A South Carolina title game was truly a battle. Spring Valley seemed poised to win a State Championship in their second visit in as many years. They led by 21 points at one time in the game, a statistic that will probably haunt them in the offseason as Goose Creek was able to come back in a breath-taking 64-63 win over the Spring Valley.

Spring Valley led by three with less than a minute to play. However, the game was tied at 63 in the closing seconds at which point Spring Valley called a timeout that they did not have. The result was a technical foul that put Goose Creek on the charity stripe. Aleighsa Welch, who led all scorers with 36 points, made one of the two free-throws which proved to be enough for the 4A Girls South Carolina State Championship.
