SC Governor Mark Sanford pays $140,000 fines for cheating on Jenny Sanford

mark_sanfordSouth Carolina Governor Mark Sanford was facing 37 charges from ethics violations that stemmed from his affair with an Argentine woman whom he called his “soul mate” which carried a $74,000 maximum penalty.

Governor Sanford agreed to pay the $74,000. He also agreed to pay over $66,000 for airline tickets, the use of a South Carolina state aircraft, misspent campaign money and the cost of the investigation into his misdeeds. Despite agreeing to pay the fines and the 37 charges of ethics violations, Governor Sanford would not admit any wrong doing or that he broke any laws.

“I continue to maintain my belief in the innocence of my actions being judged by the Ethics Commission,” Sanford said

The State Ethics Commission reprimanded Governor Sanford in their official ruling and made the point that Governor Sanford did, indeed, break laws.

Governor Sanford still has to face possible criminal charges that could come from an investigation from the office of the State’s Attorney General Henry McMaster.
