Officials of each sponsoring college select their scholarship winners from among finalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

This year 200 higher education institutions are underwriting scholarship awards through the National Merit program. Sponsoring colleges and universities include 120 private and 80 public institutions located in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

D.W. Daniel High School in Pickens County had six winners of college-sponsored scholarships, while the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville tallied five. Clemson University tendered the most scholarships at 14, while the University of South Carolina gave six and Furman University gave four. In addition to the public school winners, two awards went to home-schooled students and 12 others to students enrolled in private schools.

Another group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2010 competition to over 4,900. Winners announced thus far are among approximately 8,400 distinguished high school seniors who will receive National Merit Scholarships this year worth $36 million for college undergraduate study.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance and was founded in 1955 specifically to conduct an annual scholarship program. The majority of scholarships offered each year are underwritten by 500 independent corporate and college sponsors.

Bob McNair graduated from USC in 1958. Over fifty years later and at 78 years of age, he’s the owner of the Houston Texans NFL franchise.

McNair spoke about the interesting dynamics of owning an NFL franchise such as the responsibility of carrying the hopes of the millions of fans who live and die by his team’s success. McNair’s Texans are a young team, only eight years old, but have been on their way up in the last couple of years. They had their first non-losing season two years ago when they went 8-8. Last year, they went 9-7 and just barely missed the NFL playoffs.

The other seven inductees of the 2010 SC Athletic Hall of Fame class were:

Paul Scarpa (Furman Tennis Coach)

Joe Bostic (Clemson Graduate and NFL Linesman)

Stan Smith (US Open Tennis Champion)

Wayne Tolleson (Major League Baseball success)

Horace Grant (Clemson Graduate and former NBA forward)

Bill Currier (USC Graduate and NFL defensive back)

Courtney Shealy Hart (2000 Olympic Gold Medal swimmer)

Greenville, S.C. – May 12, 2010 – Today Frank B. Halter, Coldwell Banker Caine’s chairman and renowned Greenville civic leader, accepted the prestigious Order of the Palmetto from the South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s office. The award is the highest level of civilian honor bestowed by the Governor’s Office and recognizes lifetime achievement and service to the state.

Frank B. Halter accepts the Order of the Palmetto. The award is the highest level of civilian honor bestowed by the S.C. Governor’s Office and recognizes an individual’s lifetime achievement and service to the state.

The Order of the Palmetto was first presented by Governor John C. West in 1971. In 1999, Governor Jim Hodges established a non-partisan panel to oversee and impose a more stringent criteria and nomination process of the award.

After serving in the United States Air Force as a captain, Halter graduated from the University of Georgia, and joined his father-in-law, “Bubber” Caine’s, real estate company in 1953. Under his leadership, the company has grown from one office with 12 employees to an Upstate-wide presence consisting of more than 240 residential and commercial real estate associates and staff.

His notable career accomplishments include developing South Carolina’s first enclosed shopping mall, McAlister Square, in Greenville in the mid-1960s, as well Dutch Square Mall in Columbia and Myrtle Beach Square Mall. He is a member and past director of the South Carolina Association of Realtors, and past president of the Greenville Board of Realtors.

At the civic level, Halter is a past director of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, as well as a former director of the YMCA in Greenville. He’s held leadership positions with the Greenville Chapter of the Red Cross, the Greenville Rotary Club, Christ Church Episcopal School and the United Way of Greenville County.

Halter has also freely donated his time and energy to Project Host soup kitchen in Greenville. He’s served as trustee and chairman of the Greenville Hospital System Foundation, and is past president and chairman of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce.

Since its inception, only 3,500 people have received South Carolina’s Order of the Palmetto. Some of the more well-known people to have received the award are singer James Brown, author Pat Conroy, tap dancer Clayton “Peg Leg” Bates, and Civil Rights activist Septima Clark. In 1986, Governor Richard Riley awarded one to the “Unknown Confederate Soldier.” A host of politicians have also been granted the honor – including several governors.

There aren’t many organizations dedicated to making Greenville a better place, that hasn’t been touched in some way by Frank,” said Mayor Knox White of Greenville. “He defines civic leadership, and his contributions to our area will be felt for generations to come.”
